Default Annie the mouse RB

In March I took in two mice that someone posted for a new home on Freecycle.
Annie was solid black and Madison is black/white. Annie was very active and
ran on the wheel like she was trying to run away forever. Madison has an
old injury to one of her legs and sort of drags it, so she isn't as fast.
Annie was very timid; Madison tame and loves to be held. Maybe it's just
that she's slower to move.

Tonight I found Annie dead in the tank. Both of them had just been to the
vet a few weeks ago. Even when she was laying in my hand completely stiff
and not vibrating like mice do when you hold them in your hand (sort of like
they're purring) it was hard to believe she was dead. But her mouth was
open, and her eyes were open. I hope it wasn't a long drawn out death today
while I wasn't home. I usually don't check on them in the morning before I
leave for work because they're normally sleeping in the nest at that time.
So I don't know when it happened. Last night she was eating her veggie and
fruit treats as normal.

Madison is now alone. Mice are communal so I'm not sure how long I can wait
to get another one and introduce them, or else find Madison a home with
other mice. Taking them was an impulse but they've been so much fun to get
to know.

I hope it wasn't something I fed them that killed her.

I don't know that much about mice, but I'm sorry you lost her. And I
hope Madison doesn't get too lonely while you look for another playmate
or home for her.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Purrs that you find a solution for Madison.
How have the cats reacted to them?

Thank you Marina. The cats have of course acted like cats who want to eat
mice, but the set up didn't let them get to the mice. So they watch them
when they're awake and running around and playing. They bat at the aquarium
glass but the mice seemed indifferent and even oblivious to the cats, and
even when they noticed them watching, they'd just put their front paws up
against the glass and watch back.

Cheryl, I'm so sorry to hear that. I'm also sure that you did not feed them
anything that killed Annie. Mice have a very short lifespan (usually no
more than 2 years), and you gave Annie a very good life for the time she was
with you.

I'm so sorry that Annie is gone. She sounded like a very special little
friend.

I'm sorry for your loss. Perhaps she died of old age? I have no idea
what their life expectancy is.
