How many shots do my cats need? Is the Vet ripping me off? Help!!!
The same thing happened to me in October. The prices seem correct. My
cats got their distemper shots then needed a booster 2 weeks later. My beef was that the vet charged for another "wellness" visit when he had just seen them 2 weeks before. why couldn't they have been whisked in, got their shots, and leave. I felt ripped off. |

I'm sorry about the poor quality scan. Here's an enlarged one:
http://tinyurl.com/e2od2 Thank you all so much for your responses. I'm going to go ahead and get the booster shots next week. Here's a photo of the little guys 5 days after they had been spayed and neutered. I haven't had a pair of cats that like to sleep together since I was a kid. These two are such a joy to watch. Thanks everyone. http://tinyurl.com/7v7rf |

The answer depends on the type of vaccine given. Rabies only has to be given once as a kitten and should be given at 12 weeks at the earliest. The feline leukemia vaccine has to be boostered 3-4 weeks after the first vaccine in order to achieve adequate immunity. The FVRCP vaccine may or may not need to be boostered depending on how old the cat is when it recieves the first vaccine and what type of vaccine given. If the vaccine was a killed vaccine then it needs to be boostered. If the vaccine was a modified live vaccine it only needs to be boostered if given before 14 weeks of age. From my notes: "Spayed 7/12/2000, distemper and rabies, suture out 7/25/2000 and got leukemia vaccination, FeLV+. 4-in-1 plus FeLV+. 3 years in a booster, then 3 year get a booster. 2001 should have the booster a year later. Year old in July. So July 2000 rabies and distemper, then feline leukemia 2 week later. And August 2000, 4-in-1 and another feline leukemia." I have kind of the same problem. I do not recall getting any booster a year later in 2001. I do recall the rabies, distempter, probably 2 x feline leukemia and 1 x 4-in1?? I think she needs another 4-in-1, which is the FVRCP? I gather the big question is whether it was killed or modified. It was kept in the 'frig. What would be the most logical? I suspect the live would be more expensive? Would only the live be kept in the 'frig or really both? What type would a vet keep in the 'frig of the vet's residence? Impossible to know now? What would you suggest? The cat still probably has rabies immunity although that is supposedly given at 3 year intervals. The non-adjuvanted is certified only for 1 year but that's probably good for 3 years. It's all so confusing. |
