US law considers the cat's owner responsible for its actions? In the UK,
cats are held to be free agents, and their owners cannot be held legally
responsible whatever the little beasties get up to ;-)

Does that hold for dogs, too? If your dog attacks the
postman, are you not responsible?

Under common law, dogs are considered to be under the control of their
owners. Cats are not.

No. A dog is considered to be under the control of its owner. If your dog
causes damage or injures a person or animal then the owner will be held
liable and may face criminal charges.

Hrm. Doesn't seem like a logical distinction.

I think if a few cats started acting like Lewis in the UK, the laws
might change.
