WOW! I can't remember when I started...maybe a year before the great split
wars? When did they start?
kathyG

The split happened in very, very early 1997, so I'm guessing that the
Great War took place during the last quarter of '96.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.p...ty/about?hl=en is a
link to an "overview" of RPCC, complete with a tally of posts for each
month from 2/97 to now. There were a LOT of posts until 2001, when
suddenly the number started taking a HUGE nosedive, as you'll notice.
The only time since then that we have numbers like we used to have is
around the time of the Jellicle Ball in late October of every year.

Cory,

It's very interesting to see the statistics for "my" group (this is the
only one I regularly read on Usenet now, there used to be many).

I think part of the impetus for change has been the web - there are so
many more "community" options available now, back in the late 90s Usenet
and a few other mailing lists were the only options. Now there are
forums everywhere, they are easy to set up and easy to maintain.

But this group is special to many of us. My original kitties (Binkley,
Opus and Frieda) are all now at the Bridge, they were the original
posters in the late 90s for me.

When they were sick, or went to the Bridge, this was just about the only
place that I could go for some support and understanding. Nobody
understands how much you miss your kitty, except another lover of cats.

This group will continue to change, and like everything else, we'll
remember the good 'ol days.

But meanwhile, I shall certainly continue to enjoy the adventures,
balls, and relationships in rpcc.

Julie

still has space for more kitties, and we'z gots extra cars an

I left shortly before that, so I don't know. I think I left about the time
we were taking in our granddaughter to raise, my father was dying, I was
working full time and taking three classes... all at the same time. I just
ran out of steam. In my case it had nothing to do with any of the members
or being angry at anyone. I've always loved this group and the kitties and
people in it.
Ellie

Okay so I joined close to when you did. But how odd - In 2001 rpcc took a
nosedive? Have you any idea why? Was there some sort of awful flame war?

I don't remember why I left - well, it was before 2001. I was having a lot
of personal stuff that took a huge lot of time and my business was tanking
so I was job hunting too and I had no time left for anything.

Margaret, I agree with you re the Southern custom of Homecoming. That is
exactly what the Jellicle Ball is. The RPCC is indeed and always has been a
magical place. Beautifully said.

hmmmm - that makes a lot of sense. I know about 8 or more email groups split
off this group, and perhaps potential new members just go to one of the now
available email groups or forums. But this group is the only one I know of
that is devoted to meowchat and that makes it unique.

Ofcourse the group has *evolved* over the years, possibly as some
of the membership has *changed*, but the understructure ...that seems
to have been there, helping the community to have *understructure* for
lack of a better word has been what helps keep the community together.

Those who come back for the Ball, for Kissamouse, for checking, in the
ways I have been taking for granted, they are like the angels who watch
over us. I'm getting gushy..sigh

Where I seem to be going with this is that we learn from history, from each
other, that everyone is important to the community in different ways, and
that it's important that some things, the foundation, the walls, the roof of
a building stay the same as much as possible, while the occupants, paint,
carpets, accessories change. The building thus evolves. We should expect
things to evolve, but change for the sake of change doesn't make sense to
me,
it's like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

IMO,
Sylvia
