Kyla We have medicare - about 80% of the cost of the mammagram will be refunded (eventually). If I was on a pension, they'd probably bulk bill, but I'm not. What is 'bulk bill'? it is when the organisation claims the cost direct from medicare, rather than you paying for it and then havign to apply for a refund. Most medical specialist places don't bulk bill non-pensioners because they like charging above the listed rate for their services, and they would have to accept the listed charge if they chose to bulk bill everyone. Just to make it more complicated, after I've got my medicare refund, I can then claim from my health insurance 80% of the difference between the listed rate and their charged rate. It gets complicated, so complicated I often don't bother to claim for small expenses. I should since i have the maximum health insurance, but it often seems like too much hassle for not much reward. Yowie Wow, what a pain. Most doctor offices and clinics and hospitals here have arrangements with insurance companies and agree to accept what the insurance company will pay. It is a huge part of negotiating - clinics and hospitals want you to come to their services so they negotiate with insurance companies to get you there. Even the pharmacies here do it. They want your business so much that they make deals with your insurance company to get you to come there. Bridget |

My optometrist, for example, swipes my medicare card and my health insurance card, and then tells me how much extra cash I have to pay (if I pick wisely, I don't have to pay anythingout of my own pocket). Pathology and radiology places seem reluctant to this, however. I don't know why. Yowie |

I am a firm believer in universal health care - our system isn't perfect by any measure, but it does mean that no-one will mis sout on vital medical services just because they can't afford it. Yowie But what is one to do with NO medical insurance??? *sigh* at a loss and feeling very sad on this Monday Kyla -and Clowder I remember how it was with no insurance. Right now with me and my mother at our age it is almost 500 each that is a hmo only. Luckily mom has dad's coverage from when he was alive or the prescriptions would eat us alive. The medication I take for my diabetes and migraines run about 400 a month that is with my co pay. Time to move to the bahamas ;-) You get migraines?? You might want to avoid foods with MSG in them....monosoduim glutamate , which is a flavor enhancer. It's mostly found in Chinese food or Japanese food, but also some canned (tinned) foods have it in them as well. I rarely get 'send me to the hospital migraines' any more when I started avoiding MSG like the plague. It seems to have helped in that aspect. I read labels and ask , IF we go out to eat, I always ask if there is any MSG in the food. You might have to avoid red wine, sharp cheeses and chocolate as well..try and avoid these foods and maybe your migrains will go away. Hope hope PUUURS I am right there with you Kyla. I did not want to get out of bed this morning finally forced myself up around noon. I told myself I can't fall into depression like I am doing right now so I got up and went to the gym. Ohhh, I know what you mean...I'm trying not to let my depression get the best of me, wish I could go to a gym and work out, but with my disabling bad knees, I can't. And my pain is so bad I have to take horrid meds that I hate, and they just don't work!!! Went shopping at Albertsons got some crinkle fires and some pork chops. They had peel and eat mozzarella stick on sale. So I am going to make stuffed pork chops with mozzarella cheese and the chops will be breaded with seasoned crumbs and ms.dash. Might make a good dinner tonight That might help... I've no appetite from ll the pain and am forcing an Ensure drink, so I've got 'something' in my stomach.. PUUUUURS and send me an e-mail if you wanna talk some more..okay? Kyla --and Clowder |
