Default Any Success Stories Dealing With Mycoplasma haemofelis organism...

PossRat is still with us...The first of this week was bad he was barely
getting up and not eating/drinking... he's had 2 good days now...I have to
really keep on him about eating...started the NutraCal route again as he
wasn't eatting on his own (I make a slurry of it and syringe it down
him)...Poss's color is a little better today(still not pink and rosy at his
ears and gums like he use to be) ...He's gained 2 oz... which is good...I
really hate having to give him the Doxycycline twice a day as, he hates it
and starts stressing out when I give it to him...But it's a vital part of
his medicine regime... I'm glad to hear there is someone else out there that
is having success with the treatment and maintenance of this NASTY
disease...Hugs to you and your kitty Adam! :-) Liz

Liz - my cat Adam has been dealing with Mycoplasma Haemofelis since I
got him in 2002. He generally has a flare-up every year, and is having
one now.

It's tough - I have to work hard and be very pro-active to get him
better each time. But he does get better. The best thing you can do
is to make sure he gets all his meds, try to get him to eat and drink
as much as possible, and keep him as free from stress as possible.

Please post back and let me know how he's doing - I've never known
anyone with a "haemobart" cat before! When Adam was first diagnosed,
it was called haemobartonella - now they call it mycoplasma
haemofelis.

Best of luck to you and PossRat,

Karen and Adam

Hi Liz - sorry it's taken so long for me to write back. Hope PossRat is doing well.

A lot has happened with Adam since I last wrote. He wasn't getting better with his usual antibiotics. Then, on June 17, the vet told me he had a "light" positive on the in-house leukemia test, which was a complete shock - he had been tested several times before and always was negative; he does not go outside.

Then, thank goodness, the IFA test for FELV at the lab came back negative. So now we're just back to dealing with his anemia. He as a very, very enlarged spleen and the vet now thinks that his years of dealing with haemobart has caused a sort of autoimmune response where his body is just detroying red-blood cells willy-nilly, for no apparent reason. He's having a spleen biopsy tomorrow, and may end up having it removed. Sheeeesh!!!

Anyway, to answer your question, right now he's on prednisone and Pet-Tinic, an iron supplement. But I think the course of his disease has taken a somewhat different path than PossRat at this point. Hope your guy is getting stronger. Let me know.

Karen and Adam

Sorry to hear Adam has been doing poorly... but glad to hear the FELV was
negative... Poss is still with me...he's still on Amoxicillen, Doxycycline
60MG/ML, (which he fight me on twice a day)...it causes him to droll badly
but it's a very necessary med. He too is on Pet-Tinic, twice daily(1 1/2 ml
per dose) also, as I/we are out of town on business(I couldn't leave him at
home)...he's on a pill steroid(liquefied)...I've been having to supplement
his light appetite with slurries of Nutra Cal...finally found he will eat a
bit of dry Science Diet kitten food...so he gets that...We go back to the
vet on the 1st for a recheck of all his stats......I'll keep you and Adam in
my thoughts and well wishes... :-) Liz
