We've moved!
A little over a month ago, we relocated from Virginia USA to Oregon
USA, from right coast to left coast. DH's employer promoted him, which came with a relocation. I've got a new job that allows me to work from home (the cats sleep all day, go figure, except when I need to be on the phone with a client, whereupon they yowl and play fight. LOUDLY.). We are in a temp housing apartment for the moment, but found a house that we will be moving into in about 3 weeks. I won't mention the ordeal of selling our VA house. At least we finally got an offer on it. The trip out was memorable, and mercifully brief (in hindsight). We flew. I had boarded the cats for the 2 days the movers were in packing and loading. I picked them up the day of the flight, Pippin peed in his carrier on the way to the airport. At the airport, we had to do the special check-in with the cats. You should have seen my face when the TSA agent said "Now take the cat out so we can inspect the carrier." So there I was, holding a pee-soaked, terrified Pippin (who fortunately was too scared to panic) in a very crowded and noisy airport while TSA made sure that I hadn't packed the carrier with explosives. Sheesh. Our flight was delayed by almost an hour, but we made it to Oregon very late that night (our two DDs did really well). We've recovered from that, and have settled in as much as one can in a dwelling with only a few of our own things in it. The cats have benefitted in one way: I went to the local craft store the other day to get stuff for the girls, and came home with arm loads of things like small pompoms, beads, pipe cleaners, feathers... The girls have learned that it's more fun to watch the cats play with "their" things than it is to fuss about the cat having stolen a pompom. Purrs and hugs to all who need them. Years ago, she confiscated a small bullet from one of her little students and dropped it in her purse but forgot all about it. Some time later, she and my father flew to Texas to visit me. Well, you may guess what came next...the bullet was still in her purse and was found during the inspection. Luckily, this was long before the days of 9/11 and Homeland Security, so the agent just laughed about it when she explained (and confiscated it again, of course). MaryL |

Winnie I have no idea how they were during the flight, they were in the cargo section. I certainly felt badly that they had to be in their carriers for what turned out to be about 12 hours, including the 6 hour flight. At any rate, they recovered very quickly once we were all together again. Caroline S. |

Winnie I noticed that Caroline could not answer your question because her cats flew in cargo. I have flown many times with my cats (one at a time, when I only had one). I always flew with them in the cabin with me, and each of the cats traveled with no difficulty at all. The only time a cat got sick was years ago before airplanes would permit the cat in the cabin. I did travel with the cats in cargo several times during that period, and they seemed nauseated each time -- but no problems since I began traveling with them in the cabin. It is important to make reservations well in advance because most airlines will only permit one pet per cabin. You will be charged as if your cat is "excess baggage" even though Rusty will take the place of your carry-on suitcase. I suggest that you try to get an aisle seat. It is easier to get the carrier under that seat than under one of the inside seats. Incidentally, Rusty will be under the seat in *front* of you, so you also need to avoid the very first row of seats because there would be no place to put Rusty in that case. MaryL |

I flew across the country with my cat when I moved from Massachusetts to California, back in 1992. I had to pay a "pet fee" to bring her on, but it wasn't a lot extra. I had her in a small carrier under the seat in front of me, just as Mary described. There are carriers designed specifically for air travel, they have the right dimensions so they fit under an airplane seat. Unfortunately this cat was too old (age 16) for drugs, so she had to fly without benefit of tranquilizers. And because she was under the seat, I couldn't hear over the sound of the engine to be able to tell whether she was upset or not. I hope that she just slept under there. I left her alone because I figured she probably didn't need any stimulation. She was quiet when we landed, while we got off the plane, while I picked up my luggage, while I took a bus to the rental car place to pick up a car, and while I drove to the apartment complex where I was moving in. (I did peer into the box to make sure she was alive!) When I got to the complex, nobody was in the manager's office, so I went into the community room where there were exercise machines. At that point I let her out of the box so she could move around while I waited for someone to show up and let me into my apartment. I gave her some water from the water dispenser. I didn't have to wait too long, and soon we were installed in our new home. I quickly ran to a convenience store next door to buy food, a litter box and litter, and then we were all set up! -- Joyce ^..^ (To email me, remove the X's from my user name.) |
