(OT) 8-8-08 Russia invading Georgia
"Cheryl" wrote in message . .. "Daniel Mahoney" wrote in message news I guess I should read beyond the headline... The Russian incursion began after Georgia launched a major military offensive to retake control of South Ossetia, which has enjoyed de facto autonomy since the early 1990s but officially remains part of the country. Russia is siding with the S Ossetian rebels. Israel has "military advisors" there, assisting the Georgian troops. Georgia is also an ally of the US. And there is a LOT of oil involved. The way I heard it was that South Ossetia broke away from Georgia and rejoined Russia, so Russia is just protecting it's own. This could grow very messy and could involve a lot of the world. No doubt. Not what we need more of. This is a very dangerous situation. Russia does not like it when the old constituent republics break away, and invariably sets itself up in strong opposition to their governments. We are on very shaky terms with Russia at the moment, and Georgia's government is pro-US; so Russia is very eager to destabilize Georgia any way it can. When bits of Georgia break away, such as South Ossetia and potentially Ajaria, Russia throws its support behind the rebels with a view to reabsorbing them into greater Russia. Naturally there is a lot of confusing and conflicting propaganda being thrown around. Medvedev and Putin very much want to restore Russia's former power and glory, and seem tempted to throw a little weight around. This bears watching very carefully. -- Theresa, Stinky and Dante drtmuirATearthlink.net Stinky Pictures: http://community.webshots.com/album/125591586JWEFwh |

bastXXXette William Hamblen Pat : Tune in CNN or GCN. I don't watch the news...too depressing. Valuable oil and gas pipelines run through Georgian territory. It's 1827 all over again. Ugh But with more panic this time because we're running out of oil. Sad but true:/ What's the solution? Some are suggesting drilling in Alaska.
