Cactus fruit. They're called "tuna" in Spanish, I think - I remember a
trip to Mexico when I was in college, and a street vendor calling out
"tuna" right under our hotel-room window. (It DID seem an awfully
strange thing to be hawking at seven A. M., until I found out it didn't
mean what it does in English.)

They grow here (Tennessee), too. It's a cactus (opuntia). The ones
we have grow flat on the ground and are just weeds. Some types of
prickly pears are edible.
