Fur changes after an illness
Recently, I had a URI go through my clowder. I lost one cat, Katie to
it, and I almost lost Widu. It has been a long recovery for her.but she is getting much better, and will give me kisses if I ask her. (Little nose into the air, and touching mine.) Amanda, my siamese mix had a fairly mild case of it. But, a few days after we noticed that her face fur looked different, but couldn't quite figure it out. After about a week, we realized that her dark fur (she is seal point) is being replaced with beige fur. Right now she looks like she has a speckled face - very different! We keep asking her when she is going to get her face back, and she squeeks at us. (Amanda: How to heck do I know!) We think she had a fever and it warmed up her face, so the fur that is growing back will darken over time. Has anyone else had this happen with a siamese? Mishi |

They do have color changes in their fur over time. I sure hope they are all well now. The speckled whiskers are what cracks me up. Jo |

We think she had a fever and it warmed up her face, so the fur that is growing back will darken over time. That sounds like a good theory. Usually, a Siamese will get darker over its body as the cat ages, maybe because their circulation isn't as good? So their body surface tends to cool. But what could have lightned your cat's face? A fever seems like a good guess to me. In any case, I'm very sorry about your loss, and I'm glad everyone else is getting better. Amanda's nose-touches sound very cute. My cat Roxy loves to do this, too. Joyce |

I had something like that happen with my Ishmael - he was black and white and the black areas turned grey from the roots. I figured out it was biotin deficiency - the foods used for treating urinary tract problems often contain a lot of egg, which binds to biotin (we had him on the Hills c/d). So I got some biotin supplement capsules and mixed them in with his food. After a few weeks his fur went black again. The capsules I used were intended for humans, 300mcg. About one a week - I opened the capsules and sprinkled the stuff on his food. I kept this up as long as he was on the Hills food (which was a few years, until they changed the formula and he wouldn't eat it). ============== j-c ====== @ ====== purr . demon . co . uk ============== Jack Campin: 11 Third St, Newtongrange EH22 4PU, Scotland | tel 0131 660 4760 http://www.purr.demon.co.uk/jack/ for CD-ROMs and free | fax 0870 0554 975 stuff: Scottish music, food intolerance, & Mac logic fonts | mob 07800 739 557 |

I even remember reading that a Siamese cat whose had a cast put on an injured leg will have lighter-colored hair grow in on that leg, since the temperature under the cast is warmer. But the normal hair color will grow back in after the cast is removed. It hadn't occurred to me that a fever might cause the same kind of effect. Very interesting! Donna, Captain, and Stanley |

It'll probably change back by the time he gets his winter coat. Frank's always did. Sherry |
