Default Cruising Cats: An unexpected offer

Tuesday, March 28, 2006

Today, we came upon the sailboat that we had seen tied to the bollard by the
West Port Arthur Bridge. When the sailor did not respond to a radio call,
Jim pulled up alongside him and asked where he is headed.

I saw he was traveling with a terrier mix dog and sent the man greetings
from our two cats to his dog.

To our surprise, he asked if we'd also like a dog. We declined, and
continued on ahead, leaving the sailboat and its two occupants behind.

Shortly after our conversation with the sailor, we came face to face with a
large barge. Jim contacted the captain on the radio to ask on which side to
pass. The captain asked if we had any live fish.

Puzzled, Jim said no, but we have two cats aboard.

Then, the tow captain asked if we'd like to part with one of our cats. He
explained that he was thinking about having an animal aboard for company.

Jim said that we were keeping the cats, but the man on the sailboat behind
us had offered us a dog.

We went on by the barge, but looked behind to see what would happen when he
met the sailboat. Sure enough, the tug pushing the barge stopped and seemed
to be conversing with the man on the sailboat.

That afternoon, we pulled into the fuel dock in Intracoastal City, took on
fuel and tied up at the available dock for transients. We were getting
settled when the sailboat pulled up, with both man and dog aboard.

He told him that the tow captain had asked him about the dog, but
reconsidered when the dog barked at him. The man said he'd been half
kidding when he'd offered the dog. He was concerned that the boat was too
small for a dog that had so much energy, and for the dog's sake, he'd give
her up if the right home came up.

(To be continued March 29)
