No. My point is that the value of any of these things -- decimated
wildlife, unwanted cats that get killed, starfish that dry up on the
beach -- is arbitrary. You would rather get your cat at the shelter
than from a breeder. That is fine as a personal preference. When you
express it as a moral principle, however, you invite skepticism from
those who see the value of life as something to be measured by a
recognized social contract rather than private whim.

I think it was David Hume who said something to the effect that rights
without the force of law are so much hot air. Likewise with saying
"every life matters." By any objective measure, the life of a cat
doesn't matter much in the real world, even though we might wish it
did.
