The litter is too dirty for her and that's what she is telling you. I
use Cat's Pride and completely change it once a week.

So you say Jill is not keeping Persia's litterbox clean? Well, I don't know
about that as I've never been there to examine it.
Have you?

LOL No, this person hasn't been here to examine it. I scoop and add
more litter twice a day. The vet said completely emptying the litterbox
(and yes I wash it) once a month for a single cat is fine. This is
recent behavior from an older cat. I haven't changed MY
scooping/cleaning litterbox habits in all the years she's lived with me.

Persia was declawed (by someone else, I will add before some certain
people start foaming at the mouth over it) when she showed up at your
place, wasn't she?

Some declawed cats have pain in their elder years when "digging" in the
litterbox, so therefore attempt to avoid the litterbox for that reason?
Is there any way that you could keep an eye on her and see if she
exhibits any signs of foreleg pain? (limping, over-grooming)?

That *might* be the culprit.... however, it does not explain the
intermittent frequency of it happening....

Or it could be that she wants a litterbox to pee in and a different one
to poop in...

sigh

Cats..... such confounding creatures....

Tiger does this sometimes but it appears to be a "clingon". It is
usually a small piece and can be found just about anywhere. There is
usually a larger "deposit" in the litter box.

Yes, she was front declawed when she demanded I let her into the apartment.
I wish they hadn't done that but I can't undo it so...

Nope, she's not limping, walking gingerly or showing any signs of pain. She
doesn't have a problem "digging" to cover pee. And she's never urinated on
the bath mat.

Yes, they are! I guess I'll just keep taking the bath mat off the floor
every time I get out of the shower. It's working so far I just can't
figure out why she's doing this.

That's not the case with Persia. In fact, I can't think of any time she
ever had a "clingon" LOL If I leave the bath mat on the floor, *sometimes*
(not always) there will be a "deposit" on the bath mat, not in the litter
box. Other times, not. I'll just keep picking it up after every shower.
It seems to be working.

So you're telling me, after 11 years I've suddenly changed the way I scoop
and clean the litter box?! No, I haven't. This is a fairly recent
occurrence. And it's intermittent.

When I first moved into this apartment (many years ago), I bought a
new towel set, including fluffy bath mats. They were nice, but Smudge
soon ended that when she pooped on one of them, and then folded it
over from the edge so that it covered the poop.

I then bought a pair of towel mats, and I've been putting them down
and then picking them up again (to hang over the top of the glass doors)
every day since then!

I have three litter boxes in three different rooms. Amber usually will
pee in one and poop in another.

Mike, is there a way you might "quote" what you're replying to? (I'm
ignorant as to the workings of WebTV.)

On topic: I have one litterbox and one cat. Can't see any reason for
needing more than that. Anyway, there wouldn't be any place for me to put
another litter box. The master bathroom is tiled, which is pretty much the
only place to put it.

Since my comment was on topic, I didn't think it was necessary. You
might just try a second box to see if it solves the problem.

The point Mike was making is well-known for cat care. That is, one of the
general "rules of thumb" is to have one litter box for each cat plus one
extra. Many cats to "specialize" and use one box for urine and another for
feces. I doubt if this would be an explanation for Persia's problem,
though, because she has been with you for so many years. I have two litter
boxes with two cats, so I do not have the "extra."
