That sounds rather dire, although the most interesting thing I heard in the
news was that the referendum was somehow causing DVD rentals for Braveheart
to skyrocket. Maybe I need to take current events more seriously.

LOLOL Yes, well in that movie Robert the Bruce was an Englishman at
heart. He looked after his best interests; castles and land and titles.
I wonder how much has changed?

In 1679 my paternal Scottish ancestors were captured in battle and
transported to the "colonies" that would, years later, become the United
States. Stroke of luck, that, since they had been sold as indentured
servants but the ship changed course. They made their way to
Pennsylvania and became landowners.

In 1921 my maternal Grandpa and Grandma left Scotland to come to North
America. Grandpa had worked for years as a driver in a coal mine.
Grandma worked as a maid in a fine manor house, most likely tossing out
the morning slop from the bedpans.

Was it better for them to move to America? Undoubtedly. Grandpa got a
job as an electrician and Grandma didn't have to work. He bought a
house and the vacant lot next door so no one would ever be able to build
right next to them again. He didn't like feeling crowded.

Sorry, I got off track. But the point is, Scotland has been trying to
be a separate country for centuries. If you'd asked my mom's parents
where they were from they would have said Scotland, with no connotation
to any other place.

Maybe in the US. That kind of crud hasn't featured at all in the
referendum campaign, it's just annoying American kitsch. The only
national imagery that's featured significantly has been the saltire
flag.

I work in a charity shop. I've been telling our customers that I
expect our seasonal card sales to skyrocket given that the turkeys
have voted for an early Christmas.

Scotland is voting tomorrow to be out of the UK or not.

My personal opinion is that they would stupid to do so. I could have a
foot
in both camps, since my father was a Scot and my mother English.

It would take them out of the EU. They won't have a currency unless they
can find 20 billion to shore the pound up that that they still want to
use.
England has made it clear that we won't allow them to use the pound if
they
go independent.

It's so sad. They are being led by a radical (IMO)

FGS we were fighting the Scots until 300 years ago then we decided we were
better together. So why not now, still?
I am hoping that votes go NO for independence. It seems very close in
polls until now.
The Queen only said - she keeps out of things like this - but when pushed
said "I hope they will consider the future very carefully"

And so do I. It's all very well to have your Scottishness revved up
against
England by Alex Salmond but this is irrevocable.
Scots who have moved elsewhere have been polled, 76 per cent say No. They
are not allowed to vote.

I really really hope for a No vote so we can keep Scotland in the UK.
They are voting tomorrow and we'll know by Friday.

Tweed

Congratulations (although I realize that you would not have been able to
vote since you do not live in Scotland). The vote of 55% to 45% was not
as close as many polls predicted.

MaryL

I'm very happy by the result, and yes, the vote was not as close as
predicted.
Alex Salmond has stepped down, but has already been on the TV claiming that
English politicians are reneging on the promises of the No campaign
immediately (!)
I don't think so.
What this has done, unfortunately, is striking up a backlash about the West
Lothian thing- which is why English Members of Parliament refrain from
voting on Scottish only issues, and Scottish MP's are allowed to vote on
English only issues and do.
It's brought all sorts of things out of the woodwork, like how much more
each person in Scotland gets spent on them in public services (1,600 more)
and it's alleged to be funded by England. I don't think that was common
knowledge by the man-in-the-street.
Anyway, the decision was made by the the Scots who live in Scotland. I hope
that will be the end of it.
I do appreciate the fierce nationalism that most Scots feel (remember I had
a Scottish father) but I think the right decision was made. Remember how
Southern Ireland got in a mess in the eurozone and had to be bailed out.
I can't say that I'm very happy to have a millionaire as a Prime Minister as
I think he might be out of touch with real people, but I watched the people
in Scotland who were interviewed on TV base their views on that, not taking
the long view that he might be gone next May at the General Election.
I'm glad about the outcome but it's going to lead to a shake-up. Wales & NI
will want the same we've offered to Scotland to stay in and so does England
so it's all gone a bit pear-shaped.

Enough already, please.

OB Cats: Persia would have loved the weather right how. It finally
stopped raining after days on end. It cooled off so I have the windows
open. She'd have been sitting sniffing the fresh air on the back of the
couch or by the screen door to the patio. Maybe on the kitty steps at
the dining room window.

BET on it, and SOONER rather than later.

Are you a Scot? or English, Welsh or from Northern Ireland?
If not please don't offer an opinion on it because you don't have a clue how
divisive this has been and what the repercussions would have been.
I'm glad that the Scots have voted to be in the Uk.

Let's just be happy that all the banks and big corporations in Scotland
didn't have to relocate to England. Like they thought.
And yes, it's important to me, but not anyone else to
be half Scottish. I was not eligible to vote but I considered it carefully.
I would have voted No.

My Fathers Father was from Northern Ireland (Antrim)
his Mothers side came from Wales (nee Davis, unknown exact location).

And there was an occasional Englisher in the mix (a few generations back).

I am an American, who keeps up on things most Americans don't,
and I have EVERY RIGHT to have as much of an opinion as you
OR anyone else. I just DIDN'T have the right to vote.

Luckily.

Mmm....

Maybe those places need a Kitty sitting in them soon.

Judith

smile I'm not quite ready for that yet, Judith. But I won't be
getting rid of those cat steps, either!

Good.

Sometimes, when I'm in bed I turn over and remember how lovely it was to
have Sophie lying beside me and I had to prop my one arm on the other so I
could stop her from rolling out of bed.

Judith

I have two sets of cat steps. One set is by the window in the dining
room, the other is next to my bed.

I also have a small cat tree with a barrel in the living room. She
didn't use it much but I won't be getting rid of that, either.

Here's a picture of Persia enjoying the nice weather sitting on the cat
steps when the window was open.
